No one can stop the ageing process. We all have to face the eventuality sometime. How and at what pace you age is what the question is. This is where metabolism takes a prominent place. Metabolism is a set of chemical reactions that are needed to sustain life as these processes help the organisms in our body to grow, reproduce and respond to the environment. Put simply, it is the rate at which the body burns calories. Many studies have associated the process of ageing with metabolism. Let’s see how they are connected.
Weight Gain and Age: More often than not, weight is associated age. As you age, weight gain seems inevitable and difficult to escape from. The reason for this is that with every passing decade, we lose 5% of our muscle mass resulting in a loss of strength and leading to a slower rate of metabolism. This reduced strength results in inactivity and exhaustion that follows even minimal physical activity. This process in turn leads to weight gain as you burn lesser calories while you keep losing muscle mass. In such instances, as the metabolism rate also decreases, losing weight becomes a challenging task. In order to maintain the same weight, an older person needs to consume approximately 500 fewer calories compared to what he/she consumed in his/her Twenties.

Resistance Training: How well you age is connected with metabolism. Muscle loss can be prevented with regular exercise that increases strength and the resistance levels in our bodies. Fortunately, resistance training can be done at home in the form of squats, push-ups and crunches. These exercises, if done continuously over a significant period of time, is believed to boost up your metabolism rate and make you lose weight faster and keep you active. This will eventually preserve your muscles as you lose just the body fat.
The resultant effect of following a healthy lifestyle can be seen in your personality which responds well to the changes because of an increased metabolic rate. Please note if you haven’t exercised for a long time, consult your physician before starting any new form of exercise.
You cannot control ageing but you can have a healthy lifestyle that would help you keep all the lifestyle diseases at a good distance however it is also important that along with following a healthy routine you also invest in a health insurance plan which would protect your finances against any medical emergencies.
