The pandemic was an alarm for the world to recheck their healthcare systems. The countries which did not take action timely suffered great losses. The importance of an efficient healthcare system was once again felt. Both government and private organisations strived to provide medical care to as many people as possible.
Many government-funded healthcare schemes like the Ayushman Bharat Yojana have contributed to the welfare of the public. All the facilities are provided by the government to the underprivileged to ensure that their medical needs are met.
Apart from government-funded schemes, many other non-government, i.e., private organisations, provide insurance to individuals. They offer extensive coverage and can also be modified according to the needs of the individuals opting for it. They are known as commercial health insurance plans and will be discussed in this blog in detail.
What is Commercial Health Insurance?
Commercial healthcare plans are offered by private insurance companies. They have a wider variety of types and benefits. There are many types of commercial insurance apart from commercial health insurance. There is commercial business insurance which helps businesses and individuals to protect their businesses. There is also commercial landlord insurance which ensures financial security for landlords.
Coming back to commercial healthcare insurance, the premiums that individuals pay are higher as it provides more benefits and coverage.
Types of commercial healthcare policy:
- Health Maintenance Organisation(HMOs) - In this, coverage of expenses is provided whenever you approach the primary care physician you have chosen while opting for a commercial health policy.
- Preferred Provider Organisation(PPOs) - In this type, there is a list of Primary Care Physicians(PCP). There is more flexibility and variety offered in this type as there is a network of doctors and not just one PCP. You can also consult specialists if needed without a referral from your designated PCP.
- Exclusive Provider Organisations - These also allow you to consult more than just one PCP and even specialists. However, you are just limited to in-network specialists. This type of plan is less expensive than the HMOs and PPOs.

After the pandemic, people realised the importance of temporary hospitals. Hence the insurance companies are planning to include makeshifts in the network hospitals. This will significantly impact the future of healthcare and also help the country and the individuals be better prepared for any medical emergencies.
